Our how-to guide for building wooden sheds

This is our “how-to” video which was created to help and guide you through the quick and simple task of building a wooden shed onto a wooden base. This is a job for at least two people, so you will need to have a friend or family member to help you. It is vital that you build your wooden shed onto a suitable flat hard standing, to prevent warping and potential damage. In this video, we describe building a shed onto a wooden base kit, but there are alternatives. In addition, you can use either concrete or paving slabs, but these will need to be 10 cm bigger than the footprint of your shed. For more information, please see our Technical Guides.

Dip treatment

Our dip treatment ensures up to a 10 year anti-rot guarantee provided that your wooden building is isolated from ground contact and regularly re-treated with a timber preservative. View our range of timber treatments here.

Pressure treatment

Pressure treated overlap sheds offer a low-maintenance garden building which looks fantastic. The treatment has been forced into the timber at high pressure giving a longer expected service life and removing the need for annual re-treatment Our pressure treated products typically come with a 25 year anti-rot guarantee. Some sheds are sold with dip treatment included within the standard price but can be upgraded to pressure treated for an additional price.

What cladding styles are available on timber sheds?

There are four main types of cladding when buying timber sheds, these are overlap, shiplap, tongue and groove, and interlocking logs. We discuss each of these cladding options in turn below.

1)    Overlap cladding

Perfect for those working to a tight budget, overlap wooden sheds are our cheapest buildings. Constructed using horizontal, overlapping slats of timber, our overlap sheds also feature vertical supporting battens to provide extra rigidity. Though overlap wooden sheds are the cheapest option, they are still built using good quality timber and finished to the highest professional standards.

2)    Shiplap cladding

Our shiplap wooden sheds is constructed using interlocking timber boards affixed to a rigid framework. Each timber board also overlaps with the next; this feature enables rainwater to disperse with speed. In fact, shiplap sheds are similar in build structure to tongue and groove sheds, so are sometimes called shiplap tongue and groove cladding.

3)    Tongue and groove cladding

Another choice for premium-quality garden buildings is those constructed using tongue and groove shed cladding. Tongue and groove sheds are constructed using timber boards which interlock; these boards create a watertight seal and a smooth finish. Tongue and groove sheds are the highest quality buildings we sell.

4)    Interlocking logs

These wooden sheds are made from solid logs (either 16mm or 28mm thick) and are also sometimes called log cabin sheds. If you love the log cabin look, these are a great buy. The price is higher than cladding made from boards but are more sturdily built and as great insulators keep heat inside the shed extremely well (and also keep the cold out!).
