Gold for Bradley Wiggins – owes his victory to time spent in his garden shed

Unless you've been living under a rock, you'll know that Bradley Wiggins won gold in cycling for the men's time trial.

Wiggins beat German, Tony Martin, by being 42 seconds faster. He has now beaten Sir Steve Redgrave for having the most Olympic medals, seven in all four of which are gold.

It turns out that in the run up to the Tour de France, Wiggins put his bike on rollers and spent weeks in his garden shed, training. This followed a painful end to 2011 following a crash which resulted in a broken collar bone.

He admits that this was no substitute for his time training in Mallorca:

“It's good to have the chance to train in real heat on the climbs as opposed to being sat in my garden shed with the heaters on full trying to replicate it.”

After winning Gold, Wiggins waded into the debate about cycling helmets, saying:

“Ultimately, if you get knocked off and you don't have a helmet on, then you can't argue. You can get killed if you don’t have a helmet on”

However, the Cyclists' Touring Club (CTC) have disagreed saying there are more factors involved, such as improving cycle infrastructure and cycle lanes:

“CTC believes, however, that the most effective ways of encouraging more and safer cycling are tackling traffic volume, speed, bad driving, poor road layout and the risks that heavy vehicles pose to cyclists. Strong, effective traffic policing and law enforcement are crucial too.”
