Cutting Edge Borders

Borders Provide Your Garden Design with A Cutting Edge

A painting without a frame is, well, unframed. A haircut without a slight snip to ‘take it over the ears’ is unfinished and not ready for the mirror to see the back of your head. And a garden without border edges is how the words on a page look without my reading glasses - all a slightly bit blurred. Strong borders also allow you to cut and shape your lawn or border to the exact shape you need. A line trimmer gets up close and personal to keep things tidy. Your garden simply looks better for it.

Decorative garden borders

There is plenty of choice when it comes to bordering your garden. Wood is an obvious choice as it blends so well into the garden - being natural - and don’t worry about that immediate ‘newness’ of any colour. It fades quickly. Give it a month and you will hardly notice your new addition - except take it away and it’s the equivalent of misplacing those glasses!

Forest Border sections are 1m lengths of border and are easy to install. Roll it out, hammer in the integral spikes and voila, your garden is bordered. OK, you may need a spirit level if horizontal lines are your thing, or go freestyle for a slightly more relaxed look. There are also different heights of border section to complement your particular garden space.

Garden border roll

If you have your garden designer’s hat on, you may feel that instead of vertical pieces of wood making up your border, that horizontal lengths are best. They will make a short space look longer. It’s all about the line of vision and leading your eye up the garden (path?). Log edging or mini sleepers are ideal for this.

Sleepers are used in many gardens but the sheer weight and manoeuvrability make them a two-person project and one guaranteed to tweak a back muscle or two. Guess what? Yep, half sleepers are available and are simple to move around and position. All pressure treated, the wood is guaranteed to last for fifteen years. Half sleepers are rounded on the front face and straight at the back. They are perfect for borders that would otherwise spill uncontrollably on your lawn or patio.

Log edging and sleepers

Mini sleepers are also great to use in a similar spot. Rounded on both faces, they do everything your whopping sleepers do but are again more workable. And being a mini 1m long, they are especially useful when used in a sloping garden - the steps in the border aren't as exaggerated as full sleepers. A spirit level is needed to get things looking spot on though.

If you need a more visual than practical answer to your border needs, a cute picket fence could be the answer. Unlike sleepers and border sections, they won't actually stop soil from spilling out, but they look terrific when used as a visual line between flowers and lawn, especially when the flowers tumble through and over the fence. They lend a real cottage garden look to a border. They are the definitive answer to an attempt at taming a beautifully unruly plant or two.
